Home / Stocks End the Week Mixed as Bond Yields Rise and Oil Prices Fall
It was a relatively light week for economic data, although the latest flash purchasing managers’ indices (PMIs) pointed to continued strength in the economy. We’ll provide a more complete look at the PMI data when the full reports are released after the first of the month.
Meanwhile, financial markets were influenced by significant moves in both interest rates and oil prices. Bond yields and mortgage rates rose sharply during the week, while oil prices declined on renewed hopes for a path forward that could eventually reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Against this backdrop, the major stock indices finished the week mixed. The Nasdaq 100 posted a slight gain, while the other major indices ended modestly lower.
Overall, investors continued to balance signs of economic strength against the impact of higher interest rates and ongoing developments in energy markets.
