Stocks End Volatile Week Mixed as Rising Bond Yields Pressure Markets

Major stock indices finished a volatile week with mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 posted modest gains, while the remaining major indices ended slightly lower. Emerging markets experienced the steepest decline.

AI-related technology stocks came under pressure during the middle of the week and attempted to rebound, but the Nasdaq 100 still closed with a modest loss. Despite another round of strong corporate earnings, investor attention remained focused on inflation and rising interest rates, which continued to weigh on market sentiment.

As expected, the Federal Reserve left its benchmark short-term interest rate unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75%. However, the meeting highlighted a more divided Fed, with three of the twelve voting members favoring an immediate rate increase to combat persistent inflation. At the same time, the bond market continued to push intermediate- and long-term Treasury yields higher, signaling ongoing inflation concerns.

Overseas, the Bank of Japan also left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1.0%, its highest level since 1995. After decades of battling deflation, the BOJ indicated that another rate increase could be on the table as soon as September, reflecting a meaningful shift in Japan’s monetary policy.
